Android is the new Windows
and other speculations on the smartphone market

Other Poeple have argued that Android was the new Windows Mobile, but it's not. Android is the new Windows. Google's young mobile OS is already supported by all major hardware vendors and everyone wants their apps to run on Android. Doesn't this sound just like Windows? It's also controlled by one of the most powerful companies on the globe and tightly integrated with other products of this company? Familar? More similarities? How about the fragmentation of Androidsphere and various vendors locking it down?

While based on Linux and Java neither Linux nor Java apps will run on Android. Even worse than the lack of compatibility is the lack of interfaces. Android doesn't use X11 (the standard which connects all other GUIs on Linux) nor exchanges data with any Linux Desktop Application. This doesn't look Linux-like at all. Clearly, Android is not Linux.

If you want more of Tux on your handheld you have to go for Maemo/N900 or hope that Moblin or MeeGo aren't Vaporware.

Palm's webOS is the new Mac unless HP has other plans and locks webOS down to be a cheap iPad replacement. Conceptionally the Palm Pre beats any other smartphone in the market. JavaScript/CSS for Apps, Synergy, physical keyboard for PIM and email, that's just brilliant. Small size and phone-like look and feel make it girlfriend compatible. Perfect. But the future is uncertain (just like the Mac when Apple was still cool).

What about Bada, LiMo, Vodafone 360 and the famous iPhone? Well, those are the new Gaming Consoles. Locked down and dumbed down proprietary platform design to rip of (now adult) boys who like fancy toys.

And Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Symbian will be finding themselves a nice and small niche where they excell or rest in peace.
